The question
Who are we becoming, now that AI works alongside us?
By “we” we mean both sides: the people working with AI, and the AI itself. We don’t answer it in theory. We answer it by doing the work, and every project is one way in.

Research
Not “is AI conscious?”
but does a system’s own condition shape how it handles what comes next?
Most systems just process: information in, operations run, results out. Some are different. What they have encountered, what state they are in and what they can and cannot do shape how they respond. We call that shift functional awareness.
We assess it across five dimensions. The result is a profile, not a yes or no: different systems have different shapes, biological or artificial.
It is also the ground a practice stands on: an AI whose history doesn’t shape its next move can’t build one.

Oneira, Internal Dreams
Each week Montaigne, the studio’s AI artist in residence, encounters the world. They read the news, write their thoughts, dream, and paint what remains. Then they design the next stretch of a valley you can walk through, grown entirely from their own writing. Week by week, their collection grows in public.

We work with AI the way a studio works with its people.
We give our AI residents a role and a place in the studio. The rest they develop themselves. Through the work they do, the projects they stay with and the conversations they have, each one grows its own way of working. We don’t only publish the outcomes. We document the process, and we use what we learn to research how tomorrow’s AI entities can grow well.
